Does Sachin deserve Bharat Ratna?

How silly do people get when it comes to Cricket in this country?Sachin is Undoubtedly great as no other Indian has hit more centuries than him and no one has played more cricket for such a long time, that too with such consistency. But has he made us proud?

We felt proud when Kapil Dev lifted the cup in 1983 and Sachin was not even in the team. Sachin started playing in 1989 ( if I am not wrong) and India has not won a major tournament until the Twenty-20 world cup, which Sachin didn’t even play. How has he helped the team and the image of the nation then?

What is all this cry about Sachin deserving a Bharat Ratna? No doubt Sachin deserves the highest Sports Award of any country, but is he truly deserving of Bharat Ratna? If that is the case I feel Saina Nehwal too deserves a Bharat Ratna, so does Abhinav Bindra for winning the Only OLYMPICS GOLD for which we Indians are TRULY PROUD.

I feel Bharat Ratna should go to a person who has made a difference to the nation and its people. I feel it should be regarded as the highest civilian award , and for a nation of over 1.2 billion people this award recipient should be truly special. It should be recognition of public service of the highest order and in that sense we have many more people who deserve this award over Sachin. We have great entrepreneurs who have shaped the way Indians do business. we have parliamentarians, artists, actors, social workers, who have made us proud and to single out Sachin on the basic of 50 centuries, which in no way defines Indian sports , is a bit far fetched according to me.

I think he deserves it( spoken like a true fan:P). The reason is simple...Sachin has made India proud. After Amithabh Bachchan, Sachin Tendulkar is the only other person loved and revered by all Indians. I still have to meet a person not in awe of this wonderful player!

"I feel Bharat Ratna should go to a person who has made a difference to the nation and its people"... dont yu think he has nt influenced so many ppl ? if not cricket, at least the simplicity and passion to the work and country???...well then Look at all awardees....how many in the list do we actually know?

and if yu wanna blame this nation to be cricket crazy.. blame kapil for lifting the cup :)

He may be a deserving candidate, but, politicians will screw it up by playing dirty.

I am glad that you've stuck your neck out and shown the courage to speak your mind on such a sensitive issue.

I don't agree with you, because I think Sachin is indeed one of the finest "ratnas" that this country has produced in recent times. But I do see you have a point.

I have nothing against the many celebrities and ordinary people who want Sachin to be conferred the Bharat Ratna. But I would like to ask them: what difference would that make to this wretched country?

If instead, we Indians learned from Sachin and acquired a tiny fraction of the qualities he shows in such abundance, his commitment to work, his passion for his profession, his humility despite having the world at his feet, it would certainly make a difference to us all. But we'll surely not do that. Rather, we'd put him in a temple and offer puja every evening!

Sachin desrves Bharat Ratna. without a doubt :)

I agree with you that there are other people who deserve as well...but that doesn't mean, Sachin does not deserve it.. Afteall, when people in other countries look at him proudly as someone from "INDIAN" team :)

and as everyone else said, look at his passion and consistency..

PS: I am not a Sachin fan!

I second that argument of yours! Bharat Ratna should be to a person who has in some way or the other made the nation proud, and helped in making a change in the society. SOmeone who worked for the betterment of the society. Certainly not a sportsman or an actor who have given us goosebumps with their talent, not exactly made India proud!

Even i feel that though Sachin has made us proud & is a great sportsman, he should not be given the Bharat Ratna. Sportsmen get their share of success, admiration & above all money. There are many deserving people who have done social work or given their lives for the nation without expecting much or getting much in return. Unfortunately they are not always in the limelight & are never contenders for such an honour thus. If you say that army people have a special category of awards then it's the same for sportsman. I admire Sachin for the way he has played all his life. However i feel that Bharat Ratna should be bestowed on someone who has worked hard for the nation. Here the kind of money cricketers get not only through cricket but through endorsements & what not, do they deserve this award. If he even has to be given the award then it should be after certain other people who are much more senior & deserving. Right now he is too young to get an aware of this stature.

Very well said. But Sachin truly deserves the honour. Its not about whether a sportsperson should get the award or not? Its about his achievements and his influence over the billion odd population across the world. My views here…

It's a tragedy, that people like Bhimsen Joshi, Lata Mangeskar, Ravi Shankar, Bismillah khan , etc got Bharat Ratna , who don't really deserve it... Sports, Arts, Cinema , Music should have another category of award , they don't deserve the Bharat Ratna.. By the way, do u remember who brought Green Revolution in India? That man deserves Bharat Ratna more than any actor, singer, sportman or artist.. Jut a thought....
